Crossing the border at Houlton, ME?

Hey, I'm planning a trip to visit my boyfriend in New Brunswick, and I was wondering about what the best idea is to cross the border. I'm taking a bus (greyhound) from Mississippi to Houlton, Maine, and I figured from there I could call a cab to take me to the border crossing. What exactly should I expect there? I figure I'll be walking across once I'm dropped off, so is there a specific location I should go to since I'm walking? How much, roughly, do you think it will cost to take the cab from the station there to the crossing? My boyfriend will be picking me up on the other side and driving me from there. I'd just like as complete a run-down as I can get for what I should expect, as I've never done this before and don't want to end up confused and overwhelmed... Ahah.
